Brazilian President Lula De Silva Removes Army Chief: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva sacked army chief General Julio Cesar de Arruda on Saturday. After this drastic action taken by the President, there has been a stir in Brazil. The move comes days after the president accused some army officers of allowing violent demonstrations in the capital, Brasilia, on January 8.

The official website of Brazil’s armed forces said General Arruda was removed as army chief on Saturday and replaced by General Thomas Miguel Ribeiro Paiva as the new army chief. General Paiva was earlier serving as the head of the South East Military Command of the Brazilian Army. According to reports, after sacking General Arruda, Lula met with Defense Minister Jose Mucio, Chief of Defense Staff Rui Costa and the new army chief, General Paiva, in Brasilia on Saturday night. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Museo said the violent protests on January 8 had led to a “low level of trust” at the top of the military and the government decided that a change was necessary.

Supporters of former President Bolsonaro created ruckus

Lula has strongly criticized the military on several occasions after his supporters stormed government buildings and damaged public property on January 8 in an effort to keep former President Jair Bolsonaro in power. He said several times without naming the former army chief, General Arruda, that “certainly some people in the army” supported the violent protests in the capital by allowing protesters to enter government buildings. In an interview, Lula said that “action will be taken against all military officers involved in the coup attempt, regardless of rank.
