Experts of the tea garden say that the tea gardens here are new, due to which the quality of tea here is considered very good. According to the local people, tea plantation was started in Kishanganj in the year 1993 on an experimental basis on only five acres of land in a village of Pothia block. What initially started as an experiment has now grown into a booming business. Today Kishanganj is being watched by big tea traders to small farmers.

Production of 1.50 MT green tea leaves

An official of the Bihar Tea Planters Association says that the region produces about 1.50 metric tonnes of green tea leaves per year, while 33,000 metric tonnes of tea is produced from it. At present there are 12 tea processing units in the district. District Horticulture Officer Rajni Sinha claims that today there is no migration of laborers from this area due to tea plantation. He said that due to the many government benefits available for its cultivation, farmers are turning to tea garden instead of growing paddy and wheat in their fields. He informed that more than 5,000 farmers are associated with tea plantation in this region.

Raj Karan Daftary, who started the tea garden in Kishanganj, says that he started tea cultivation here first thinking that when tea can be grown in Assam and West Bengal, why not in Kishanganj, where the weather is similar. lives. He told that today his entire family is associated with the tea business. Bihar’s Agriculture Minister Kumar Sarvjit also says that not only Kishanganj but the surrounding areas are also favorable for tea cultivation. He said that the prospect of tea industry in the state is very bright. Continuous efforts are being made to promote industry in the state. He said that Bihar is at present fifth in the country in terms of quality of tea plantation. According to the local traders, the production of tea in Kishanganj is continuously increasing. The dream of these traders is that Kishanganj should be recognized as ‘Tea City’.
