Protest Against PM Netanyahu in Israel: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s troubles are not taking the name of abatement. Once again people have taken to the streets to protest against him. In fact, the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu-led government’s plan to change the judicial system in Israel is being opposed. Thousands of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Saturday night to protest the policy.

Opponents charge that the Netanyahu government’s plan to reform the judicial system puts the country’s basic democratic principles at risk. Israeli media quoted police as saying that about a million people in Tel Aviv demonstrated against the Netanyahu government. The current government formed under the leadership of Netanyahu is being described as the most conservative and nationalist government in the history of Israel. Tel Aviv also witnessed mass demonstrations last week against government plans to reform the judicial system. Netanyahu has vowed to press ahead with plans to reform the judicial system despite opposition. His government says an imbalance of power has made judges and government legal advisers too dominant in lawmaking and governance.

charge of dictatorship

Demonstrators in Tel Aviv held placards and banners that read “Our children will not live in the shadow of a dictatorship” and “Israel, we have a problem.” Opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lepid, who participated in the demonstration, said, “This is a protest being done to protect the country. People have gathered here today to defend their democracy.” The protesting student, Layor, said, “All generations are worried. This is not a joke. It is a complete reinterpretation of democracy.” There were reports of anti-government protests in cities such as Jerusalem, Haifa and Beersheba.
